Ron Kirby, Sr was a self-motivator. In the 1960s he worked for GMAC, Burks Pontiac, and Tom Beasley's Nashville Auto Auction on his days off. In the 1970s he began incorporating auctioneering with his love of the auto industry. He recognized the importance of the fledgling Certified Auctioneers Institute and graduated in the program's third class, held annually at Indiana University. In 1977 he opened Ron Kirby Auction & Realty, Inc. and his business and financial management led him to a directorship at Franklin Bank & Trust in 1988.
He maintained his work and energy for the Nashville Auto Auction for over 31 years as he enjoyed his work for other companies across the country and abroad. In 1995, he opened his own car sale - Cars & Things Auto Auction (he never did really like that name so as a tribute to him, his family re-named the sale Kirby Auto Auction in the year 2001). His true passion was his family. A friend asked Ron after he built his auction facility, “Ron, what are you doing, building a memorial to yourself?” Ron’s reply was, “No, I’m building it for my family.” He was a devoted son, husband, father, and a “Mr. Ron” – seems he didn’t much care for the grandfather title!
After the unexpected and seemingly untimely death of the 61-year-old auctioneer, people from all walks of life, all over the country, offered their stories of Ron. More apparent now after his death, it seems that in his hectic day-to-day hustling and making a living, he did notice the scenery and nature (even if it meant running off the shoulder of the road!) and he did gladly communicate with others and listened about their lives and work and he did, with pleasure, help people. He gave money anonymously to a prominent medical research organization. He gave money to those around him in need. He gave of his talent of auctioneering to non-profit groups who asked. And he gave his time, guidance and fun to his family and friends.
Ron’s uncanny ability to read a crowd, to mask the computer-like computations in his head with enthusiasm, humor and flair like no other, made him a sought-after auctioneer and one of the most upstanding professionals in his field. But it was his charisma, his stamina, and his intense determination to work efficiently and aggressively that drove him. The funny thing is he never knew that all those qualities he demanded of himself commanded him the utmost respect and love from those who encountered him. Family, friends, associates, acquaintances – touched by his vibrant presence have a little, if not a lot, of him to remember. The outpouring of love and affection in Ron "Kirbo" or “Turbo” Kirby’s name hopefully continues to benefit children of St Jude’s Children's Research Hospital. Those families have never heard of Ron Kirby. But he couldn’t have been more pleased.
Bobby "Peppers" Bryant -A native of Lebanon, Tennessee, Bobby served as auctioneer/ringman at the Nashville Auto Auction for over 30 years. He worked with Ron Kirby, Inc. for over 25 years as well. When Kirby Auto Auction opened, he was there from the beginning, working the floor, auctioneering and of course, making his famous announcements. Additionally, he supplied dealers and individuals alike with his famous home grown hot peppers, salsas and sauces. He is sorely missed.
James Troxel - Appraiser and Ringman - a native Texan, Jim was an expert in the heavy equipment field and a fine ringman in the auction arena. Ron Sr. appreciated Jim's professional opinion and was thrilled when the opportunity arose for the two of them to work together. He was also a fine friend and is missed as well.
